Mike Basta

Euphonium

Mike became a substitute on 3rd/bass trombone with GGPB in 2013, eventually becoming a regular performer, and is currently principal euphonium. A native of Oakland, he grew up in the Bay Area and graduated from Cal State University, Hayward, with a BA in music.

Mike has played with numerous professional groups in the Bay Area, including the San Francisco Symphony and the Ice Follies. He also performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, accompanying such notable musicians as John Faddis, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, the Bill Gaither Trio, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. With Bob Hope, he toured the Eastern & Southern U.S. and Canada, representing the U.S. at the Expo ’67 World’s Fair, and performed several USO-style shows, including Walter Reed Medical Center and aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier. He also was principal trombone for the U.S. at the 1974 Herbert von Karajan Orchestra Competition in Berlin, where the orchestra was awarded the 2nd place medal.

He has also played regularly as principal trombonist for the Fremont Symphony, Cambrian Symphony, South Bay Symphony, Saratoga Symphony, Holy Names College Orchestra, the San Ramon Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Chabot College Orchestra, and the municipal bands of Hayward, Fremont, and lastly, San Leandro, for which he was also Assistant Director.
